Arthur
EXPELLED WITHOUT EXPECTATION
Before
Arthur, an 11 year old Thoroughbred gelding was discovered on an August afternoon ambling down the country roads of Harvard, IL. He was slightly underweight yet had all the characteristics of a very handsome horse. A neighbor called authorities to
help contain him until HAHS could arrive. Arthur was calm and gentle and waited patiently in a temporary enclosure. The horse was loaded into our trailer and brought to HAHS until we could investigate where he may have come from. Despite efforts from several individuals, no one was able to uncover where Arthur's home was. Neighbors claimed they had never seen him before. It was as if he had simply appeared out of thin air. In reality, he was just another horse no longer wanted, abandoned on the side of the road.
Arthur was lucky that he was rescued before he could have suffered any number of life threatening injuries. He could have ingested poisonous plants or hurt himself in unfamiliar territory. Worse yet, he could have injured someone else. Just think of the tragic loss of lives that could have occurred if he had run across the road and been struck by a vehicle. Deep scarring on one of Arthur's front legs confirmed that he had gotten caught up in something and had struggled to get free.
After
Now at HAHS, Arthur is thriving. He spends his time in a large pasture with two other equine pals. His rehabilitation is all but complete and he is due to begin some basic under saddle work soon. If his under saddle manners are anything like his
ground manners, he will prove to be an intelligent and exceptional mount. This should be a huge advantage for him in his quest to find a new forever home.
No one knows the reason why Arthur was discarded so cruelly on the side of a county road. Perhaps his owners were unable to afford to keep him in this difficult economy. Maybe they felt that he was no longer useful to them. One thing is certain - Abandonment of one's animals is never the right answer, no matter what the situation might be.
