Dusty
Before
The call to save Dusty's life came in the afternoon in mid-May 2009. The caller with extensive horse experience told us that Dusty was laying helpless in a paddock with the longest hooves ever seen.
For a better look the caller tried to coax the horse to stand or come closer to the fence. After an extreme struggle to stand, Dusty got closer to the fence, where the caller noticed that the horse was also extremely underweight.
When HAHS investigated and subsequentyly questioned the owner about the horse's condition, we were told that the hooves had not been trimmed in about 2 years and that the owner could not afford to. In addition necessary vet care was not provided and Dusty's teeth were in bad shape.
Rather than facing legal consequences, Dusty was relinquished to HAHS.
AfterDusty's home is a clean 20' x 30' stall filled with deep, soft bedding and plenty of grain and hay. He was vaccinated and has been seen by the dentist who noticed year-long neglect. X-rays that were taken of his legs are now being evaluated at the University of Wisconsin Large Animal Hospital. We are awaiting the result and hope that somehow Dusty will be able to live out the rest of his life free of pain here at the farm or at that forever home.
