Maggie & Ugly Betty

TROUBLE IN KANKAKEE

Before
Maggie and Ugly Betty, two 6 year old mares, arrived at HAHS with different storiesAfter arrival but with one unfortunate tie - neglect. Maggie first came under the care of animal control in 2008. She and her herd mates were found emaciated and struggling to survive. It wasa too late for one mini horse, and a young stud colt was in horrible condition as well. He was ultimately euthanized when veteriarians determined that his condition was too grave for survival.
Ugly Betty was found running at large in early 2009. Not sure if she was cruely abandoned or she escaped her home, she was never claimed and became custody of animal control.

After
Maggie - looking better every dayBoth mare were a little skittish at first, but both are making daily progress. Maggie is shy and unsure of herself but is willing to trust people who go slowly with her. It is suspected that she underwent physicial abuse in her past life. She has put on weight and enjoys roaming the pastures with her friends. A case against the owner for neglect is still pending. Ugly Betty, now only called Betty, has become a very beautiful horse. Though she is still underweight and unkempt looking, she has turned into a nice looking horse that will become someones forever friend but needs constant TLC.
