Copper's Story

Before
A two-year-old stud, a two-year-old palomino filly, and a seven-year-old Arab-cross gelding were being dropped off at a ranch in Chicago Heights when the truck and trailer they were being hauled in broke down. The man hauling the horses told the ranch that he would return in a few days to pick them up. He never returned! HAHS investigator Sue Silverman went to the farm to check out the situation. Immediately after her visit she called the HAHS office and told us these horses were the worst she'd seen in her 20 years of investigating! All three horses were extremely malnourished and infested with lice. An immediate impoundment was in order.

After
Due to the weakened condition of the three horses, we decided to have Sue take the animals to her place so they wouldn't have to endure the long trailer trip to the HAHS farm in Woodstock. After ten days of intensive care--including special feeding and veterinary treatment the horses were pronounced strong enough to be brought to the HAHS farm to continue their rehabilitation. A veterinarian specializing in equine dentistry was called in to do extensive tooth-work. Their chipped and cracked feet were trimmed by a farrier. The horses were bathed and deloused. Within a few more weeks, the trio became shiny, sassy and much healthier. Lucky for the horses, we've never heard from the former owner!
