Amber
A Story of Strength and Endurance
Before
Amber is a thirty-year-old Arabian mare that was slowly starving to death because her owners could no longer afford to care for her properly. They relinquished her to a facility located close to her home that cared for her until she was strong enough to make the trip to the HAHS farm. After about two weeks of careful feeding and veterinary support, a HAHS staff member arrived at the facility to bring her to HAHS. Still just skin and bones, she was standing in a temporary stall with food in front of her but had no interest in eating. She also didn't care about the flies that were landing all over her-there was no tail swishing, no foot stomping and no head shaking. It looked like she may have given up on life.
After
Over the next few months Amber gained weight as well as interest in her surroundings again. She quickly caught on to our frequent feeding schedule and began whinnying enthusiastically whenever anyone would approach the barn. After her quarantine period was over, she was introduced to two other mares on our farm, Rose and Honey, and little by little was allowed out to graze. Now she fits in beautifully with the herd and is growing a lovely bay coat for the winter.
