Belle

HAHS Saves Saddlebred Mare

Before
Belle is a 20-year-old chestnut saddlebred mare who was not being cared for by her owner. When HAHS went out to investigate her case, she was down in her pasture because she was starving and arthritic, and her owner refused to get her the veterinary care she needed. Because the owner was so uncooperative about helping her, the Illinois Department of Agriculture authorized HAHS to impound Belle, and she came to live at our farm.

After
When Belle arrived here, two veterinarians examined her, doing blood tests and x-rays to find out how best to help her. She had her hooves trimmed and was given medication to make her feel more comfortable, and is now on a special diet with supplements to help her regain the weight she lost. She now happily grazes in her pasture with her best friend Myrtle, a blind mare (see Myrtle's story), and is working on putting on more weight.
