The Hoffmann Estates Heifer
The Little Heifer That Wasn't
Before
The little heifer that we helped to rescue in this case was not being abused, but had
gotten away from her owners and ended up at an abandoned farm along Interstate 90. The area was not an easy one in which to catch an animal - a 100-acre farm with six-foot high weeds over much of it - especially one as reluctant to be caught as this animal. The cow took off running every time we got within 50 yards of her, and we ended up deciding to bring in a professional cow catcher. The final roundup party included the cow catcher, along with his horse and dog, Illinois State Police officers, Cook County sheriffs, and people from HAHS. After a long search, the heifer finally appeared, the catcher roped her - and we realized that the heifer was actually a little bull!
After
We got him loaded into the trailer without a problem, and he was immediately delivered to the people who had agreed to take him. They didn't mind at all that the little girl they had been promised turned out to be a boy.
