Become a Volunteer

The HAHS Volunteer Program

Whether you want to learn more about animals, meet others like yourself, reduce stress with physical activity, or simply make a difference in the life of a neglected animal, we (and the animals!) really appreciate your interest. You must be at least 16 years old to become a HAHS Volunteer.

Hooved Animal Humane SocietyThe first step in becoming a HAHS volunteer is to attend one of our Volunteer Information Sessions. At these sessions, we introduce you to HAHS (our mission, our farm, and our animals), invite a few of our current volunteers to speak about their experiences, and tell you what to expect from volunteering at HAHS. For example, we ask that all volunteers work at least five hours per month, and volunteers are not allowed to ride the rescued horses. Some of the volunteer jobs include mucking stalls, picking pastures, raking leaves, scrubbing water buckets, stuffing envelopes, weeding flowerbeds, grooming horses and working events.

The second step in becoming a HAHS volunteer is to take home a volunteer application to complete and return, if you think you will be able to comply with the program’s requirements. A Horse Handling Seminar is also required and usually takes place immediately after the open session. We added this group hands-on course to our volunteer orientation to make sure that all of our volunteers know the basics of approaching, catching, leading and grooming horses. The Horse Handling Class stresses the importance of safety around these large, flighty animals.

The 2010 Volunteer Orientation and Horse Handling dates are March 13th, May 8th, June 12th, August 14th and October 9th. The session starts at 9am and lasts about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Reservation is not required.
